Fallout: New Vegas is a beloved entry to the Fallout series and not without good reason. The storytelling is amazing, and the choices are vast, especially in certain quests throughout the Mojave Wasteland. Although the main storyline features the most notable decisions, there are also lots of side missions with choices to think over.
"Beyond The Beef" is one of the beefiest quests in New Vegas when it comes to decision-making. There are so many routes to take and ways to solve each problem, so it may take you a while to decide which path to choose. You can find everything you need to make the right decisions in this guide, along with a walkthrough for each route.
How To Unlock The Beyond The Beef Quest
The only prerequisite to starting "Beyond The Beef" is gaining access to The Strip, which you can find a guide for here. After you're inside The Strip, enter the Ultra-Luxe Casino and speak to Heck Gunderson, who is in the lobby. Gunderson will explain that his son, Ted Gunderson, is missing and you need to help find him.
How To Complete The Beyond The Beef Quest
After you speak to Heck Gunderson inside the Ultra-Luxe's lobby, there are many steps to complete. Follow the guide below to solve "Beyond The Beef" in many different possible ways.
Speak to Marjorie first, who is just around the corner from the lobby. Quest markers will point you toward each of the characters. Marjorie will give you a brief history about the White Glove Society, the owners of the Ultra-Luxe Casino.
The members of the group were once cannibals, but according to Marjorie, they've put their past behind them. You can suggest to Marjorie that you're also a cannibal, but it won't have any effect. Once you explain that you're searching for Ted Gunderson, Marjorie will point you towards Mortimer, another employee at the Ultra-Luxe. Mortimer is nearby inside the casino, and after entering into conversation with him, you have a few options.
If you want Mortimer to tell you the truth, then you need to pass a skill check which requires a 62 Speech skill. You can also use the Cannibal perk to get Mortimer to admit the truth. If your Karma is low enough, then you may be capable of getting to Mortimer to talk without any extra skills or perks.
The final option you have is to ask Mortimer about an investigator in the Ultra-Luxe, which will lead you down a different path and possibly to a more moral conclusion. Below you can find each possible option for how to move forward.
Investigate The Investigator
Upon asking, Mortimer will reveal that there is an investigator in the Ultra-Luxe who is trying to uncover the truth about Ted Gunderson's disappearance. You then get a key from Mortimer, which will lead to the Investigator.
Find The Investigator
Travel to the Ultra-Luxe Hotel Rooms area and search for the Investigator's body. He's inside his hotel room. On the Investigator's body, you'll find a note that reveals an upcoming meeting in the Ultra-Luxe's Steam Room which is set to take place at 4 PM. However, two White Glove Society enemies will appear upon you finding the Investigator, so be careful and have a weapon ready. They only carry makeshift melee weapons, so it's easy to defeat them.
Travel To The Steam Room
Head downstairs and travel into the Steam Room. Wait until 4 PM. At this point, a character named Chauncey will appear. He'll explain that he's a member of the White Glove Society but rejects their cannibalistic ways, so he wants to help you save Ted Gunderson.
Mortimer is planning to kill Ted Gunderson and feed him to a group full of White Glove Society members, but you can save him. Chauncey believes that Ted Gunderson is being held in a member-only area of the White-Luxe Casino. Chauncey also explains two possible methods you can use to free Ted Gunderson, including cooking a fake meal and giving chems to White Glove Society members to knock them unconscious.
After you conclude your conversation with Chauncey, a character will appear to kill him. Chauncey will always die, no matter which dialogue options you choose. You now have a few choices if you want to save Ted Gunderson, which are all in detail below.
Enter The Kitchen
You now need to travel to the casino's kitchen, which is locked and only open to members of the White Glove Society. However, it's not too difficult to gain access. Either speak to Marjorie, who will grant you access to the kitchen if your reputation with The Strip is Accepted or higher, or pick the lock to the kitchen door front behind the main bar.
You may have also gotten a key earlier depending on the dialogue options you chose while speaking to Mortimer. Regardless of how you get inside, you need to make your way to the kitchen door behind the bar, which is where Ted Gunderson is being held.
Rescue Ted Gunderson
Once you've entered the kitchen and taken the elevator to the basement, a guard will approach you. Either pass a 55 Speech or 35 Repair skill check to get past him; both will have the same effect. If you can't pass either of these skill checks, then sneaking past the members is the only peaceful option.
Once you're past the guards, you need to gain access to the freezer in the kitchen. Philippe is near the freezer, and you have a few options for dealing with him. Killing Philippe is the easiest choice, but you'll lose reputation with the White Glove Society. You can also speak to him until a few skill checks come up, which will allow you to gain his trust. These checks require either a 55 Medicine skill, a 55 Barter skill, or a 55 Speech skill.
If the skill checks with Philippe are successful, then you'll gain either the recipes, the freezer key, or both. Alternatively, there's a terminal you can use to open the freezer, and you can pickpocket the recipe from Philippe. You'll lose Karma if you use the terminal, though.
You can speak to Ted Gunderson once the freezer is open, so explain the situation and start planning your next move. You now have two options. You can either drug the White Glove Society or cook a fake meal to expose Mortimer at the upcoming dinner.
Option One: Drug The White Glove Society
Drugging the White Glove Society and making it out with Ted Gunderson as peacefully as possible is also a potential option. For this route, you'll need a Medicine skill of 25 and one Med-X. You can buy Med-X from vendors throughout the Mojave Wasteland.
Head into the basement and search for a wine bottle on top of a table inside the wine cellar or a wine bottle on a shelf next to the stove in the kitchen. You can drug either of these bottles; which one you drug doesn't matter. After tampering with the wine, wait until 7 PM and follow your quest marker to the Ultra-Luxe intercom.
Interacting with the intercom will cause the waiter to come and get the drugged wine, and after he delivers it, everyone at the dinner will be unconscious. Speak to Ted Gunderson, and regardless of which dialogue options you choose, you need to get him to follow you. Lead Ted to the right of the freezer and up a staircase, which will lead into the dinner hall.
A door will block your way if you go this route, but you can lockpick it. Alternatively, it's also possible to open the door with a key you may have gotten earlier from Marjorie or Mortimer. Regardless of your path, return Ted Gunderson to the lobby and speak to Heck Gunderson.
You can choose to tell Heck who is behind the kidnapping, but you can also stay neutral, which will affect whether you gain negative reputation with the White Glove Society or not. Heck Gunderson will give you 500 Caps, and the "Beyond The Beef" quest will be complete.
Option Two: Create A Fake Meal
You need the recipe you got from Philippe to craft the fake meal, along with a Survival skill of 75 or six Intelligence. Upon cooking the meal inside the stove in the Ultra-Luxe kitchen, wait until 7 PM and use the intercom with the quest marker to call the waiter, forcing him to come to collect the meal and bring it to the dinner.
Wear a White Glove Society outfit to disguise yourself as one of them, which you can loot from other White Glove Society members throughout this mission.
Make sure the waiter is gone before you enter the freezer once again to free Ted Gunderson. After exchanging a few words and choosing whether or not to tell him the truth of the situation, request that Ted follows you and lead him to the right of the freezer and up the stairs. There's a locked door nearby that you can use Mortimer's key on or lockpick if necessary.
Walk into the dinner hall and hide behind the bar counter while crouched down. After Mortimer says the words "Bon Appetit," you can come out and speak to him. Reveal the truth to Mortimer and the other White Glove Society, which will cause Mortimer to flee the building.
Marjorie will then thank you, and you can return Ted to Heck Gunderson in the casino's lobby. Depending on your dialogue with Heck Gunderson, you may gain or lose Karma with the White Glove Society if you tell him the truth. The father will also gift you 500 Caps for a job well done.
Help The White Glove Society
After speaking with Mortimer and agreeing to help him, you'll have to make a decision. Mortimer needs a human to cook into a meal for the White Glove Society so that they can return to their cannibalistic past; however, he would prefer not to cause any drama surrounding Ted Gunderson, who they are currently holding captive. You have a few options now, which include methods that free Ted and others that end up with him being served as a meal.
Free Ted Gunderson
Once your conversation with Mortimer is over, travel to the restaurant section of the Ultra-Luxe and walk into the kitchen. A quest marker will point you to the correct spot. Once there, use the elevator to get to the basement, which is where a security guard will stop you.
You can tell the guard that Mortimer sent you to free Ted Gunderson; however, you may need to pass a skill check which requires a Speech skill of 55 depending on your past dialogue choices. Otherwise, sneak past the guard.
Once you get past the guard, you can enter the freezer and speak to Ted. Lie to Ted and tell him that somebody other than the White Glove Society is holding him captive. He'll believe you, and you can then have him follow you back to Heck Gunderson in the White-Luxe's lobby, who will give you 500 Caps upon seeing that Ted is safe.
You need to exit the basement through the kitchen, as using the member-exclusive exit will force characters in the area to become hostile. Then you need to find an alternative to Ted Gunderson for Mortimer's meal.
Option One: Kill Ted Gunderson
If you choose to avoid saving Ted Gunderson, then you can turn him into the meal. Walk to the White-Luxe's kitchen and use the elevator to travel downstairs. A guard will greet you, but you can simply explain that Mortimer sent you, which may be locked behind a Speech 55 skill check, depending on your conversation with Mortimer.
Walk into the freezer after getting past the guard, which is where you'll encounter Ted Gunderson. You can speak to Ted before killing him, but it won't make any difference. After killing Ted, collect bodily remains and blood from his corpse and travel to the Ultra-Luxe Penthouse.
You'll encounter two guards who stand watch at Heck Gunderson's room in the penthouse, but they're not very strong, and you can kill them without gaining negative Karma. After defeating the guards, walk into the bathroom and to the bed to place Ted Gunderson's remains.
Travel outside into The Strip, where you can speak to a Securitron about the murder in question. The Securitron will rush into the Ultra-Luxe to arrest Heck Gunderson, but he'll turn hostile and end up dying to the Securitron. Speak to Mortimer once again in the Ultra-Luxe, and you'll complete the "Beyond The Beef" quest, as well as gain reputation with the White Glove Society.
Option Two: Capture Carlyle
Carlyle is another option that Mortimer can kill and cook into a meal. After speaking to Mortimer, you need to travel to Carlyle's home, which will have a quest marker pointing towards it. Either convince Carlyle to follow you through a skill check that requires 65 Speech, or you can knock him out. If Carlyle is following you, then bring him back to the Ultra-Luxe.
However, if you choose to knock him out, then place Carlyle into a nearby dumpster. There are a few ways to knock Carlyle out. Firstly, you can use the Cattle Prod Mortimer gave you. Otherwise, you can use the Black Widow perk or pass a 45 Guns speech check to knock Carlyle unconscious.
Return to Mortimer after following either of the two options above, and he'll be pleased with your work. You'll now be an upstanding member of the White Glove Society, and the "Beyond The Beef" mission will be complete.
Option Three: Offer A Human Companion To Mortimer
Offering a companion to Mortimer is one of the quickest ways to finish the "Beyond The Beef" quest. You simply have to ask a human companion to follow you, then bring them to Mortimer and offer them as an alternative to Ted Gunderson. Now travel to the White-Luxe's kitchen and lock whichever companion you wish into the freezer.
Choosing this option will swiftly complete the "Beyond The Beef" mission, but the follower you sacrifice will be gone from your save file, and any items they're carrying will also be lost.
Destroy The White Glove Society
A widely unknown option, but a possible route nonetheless sees you revealing the truth to Heck Gunderson after finding out the White Glove Society has kidnapped Ted. If you choose this option, Heck will give you a Saw-Offed Shotgun and request you kill any White Glove Society members who get in your way.
Travel to the kitchen and into the basement, then remove Ted Gunderson from the freezer using the key you get after killing Philippe. Now return Ted to Heck Gunderson in the lobby, where he'll be waiting to give you 500 Caps as a reward. This option will grant you negative Karma with the White Glove Society. Don't kill Majorie or Mortimer, though, as their survival is essential for the quest to continue.
